I have suggested in recent broadcasts that summertime is a great time to continue praying for your children: prayers for their spiritual growth and stability in challenging times, for their protection when faced with temptation, as well as prayers for doors of opportunity to open for ministry and witness.

Summertime is a great time for children to have adventures. Most families plan for some special events like camping or trips to visit relatives. Those kinds of adventures take planning and preparation. The summer months also provide a great opportunity for children to experience spiritual adventures, going farther and deeper in their walk with Jesus Christ. This kind of adventure also takes planning and preparation.

This month we have been examining different elements of “success” for a students, with a focus on the healthy development of the body, the maturing of the mind, will and emotions, and then the growth found in the realm of the spirit. Many of these things that cannot be easily tested or reported on, especially with a simple report card.

This month we are examining what exactly “success” looks like for a student. Last week I asked the question, can it be defined, when children are designed by their creator so differently? Are there areas of success that cannot be measured by a test, or even a report card?

This week at Heartland Christian Academy, boys and girls will have been facing the rigors of standardized testing. Along with the Iowa Test of Basic Skills that many of us recall from our own school days, Heartland uses mid-term reports and end-of-quarter report cards, as well as parent teacher conferences, to evaluate whether or not a child is making sufficient academic progress for their age and grade. These are tools for determining success in school.

In recent weeks, we have been focusing on the challenge given to the board and teachers of Heartland Christian Academy by our board chairman, Dr. Mark Claussen. That challenge for Heartland’s future is to pursue areas of excellence in our school that will make the next decades of educational ministry even more powerful in this community than the 30 years of in Heartland’s faithful past.

I have been sharing with you on recent broadcasts the pursuit of excellence in Christian education that is part of our goal at Heartland Christian Academy, as we both look back on thirty years of effective ministry as Christian educators and also look ahead to more decades of instructing the children of the Northland, as God permits.
